Dinner date @ Yu: Hotely-y but adequate

This is a very bare review as it was a date (; so treat it as a skim read (because typically everyone reads all my reviews in great detail - shout out to my mum and dad!)

Terrible photos because I try not to allow the fact that I now fit into the “we have to take a pic before we eat!” stereotype on the first date.

It was a bit empty which made it feel slightly like an overpriced hotel restaurant, but it was just after lockdown restrictions eased and it was a rainy Tuesday. And it was still nice.

Seared fillet and mushroom sushi (Special - not on menu)

This was very yummy and easy to eat. Not too much rice. Meaty mushrooms and tender fillet with an intense savouriness. Different sushi which was nice because I don’t think traditional sushi would have gone with the meal. The sushi roll was filled with shiitake mushroom and then each piece was topped with a slice of the rare fillet. Yum.

Duck with Hoisin Bao

The bao was nice, not overwhelming, not terrible.

Soft Shell Crab in a Sesame Mayo

This was really nice and a lot of people recommended this to me. I prefer hard shell crab (which is nearly impossible to find at Cape Town restaurants) because I sometimes find soft shell crab to be underwhelming and over fried. However this was a good soft shell crab, would have liked it to be slightly hotter in temperature but the nature of the dish means that it cools very quickly but must be eaten hot.

Chicken & Chive wonton

At the point of eating these, we were already pretty full, and these weren’t delicious enough to try finish, so we left one them. While not overly flavoursome, they weren’t terrible.

Grilled Aubergine, miso

So usually Aubergine is not my fave… usually. But this dish was actually so nice. The Aubergine was cooked to oblivion and became silky and soft and delicious. The miso was salty and umami and there was a sweetness to the entire thing too. Coated with breadcrumbs and fried. Order it even if you aren’t such a fan of Aubergine.
