Our Local: Schucks this was a good Shakshouka

Super delicious & aesthetic - I felt like I was living my life in my 20s the right way, having it together due solely to the fact that I was having brunch at this Kloof street spot. I also saw many people having coffee while working on laptops, I assume they were editing drawings or poetry or a website for a cool t-shirt company.

Iced Latte

A yummy iced Latte. Not too milky, not burnt or sour, just right.

Shakshuka (Eggs poached in an aromatic sauce of tomato and chilli with chunks of creamy feta served with your choice of toasted bread.)

Piping hot, tangy and spicy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I like shakshuka because the sauce always cuts through the richness of the egg and you can eat an abundance of sourdough in the name of not wasting that tomatoey goodness.

It was spicy, and the egg was needed to balance that out as well as the big bits of creamy, salty feta being extremely welcome. Also not too sweet or overpowered by peppers (just the right amount) and perfectly savoury.

Shakshuka is a North African dish commonly made across this region and the middle east. The exact location it originated from is disputed and everyone wants to claim this delicious dish as their own. Spices found in Shakshuka include cumin, paprika and coriander.

The only things I could fault are, I wanted more sourdough toast, and some of the egg white had a grey tinge from contact with the black surface of the cast-iron pan which it is cooked in. But the pan keeps it so hot and adds to the eating experience of it so much that I’ll let that slide.

Smashed Avo & Hummus (Roasted chickpeas & tahini dressing w. poached egg and feta added)

This is what my friend ordered. For obvious reasons, I can’t properly review this, but all the elements were good quality and fresh. It is vegan without the egg and feta.

Interior

The setting: Super hipster and plant-vibey, tables set amongst antiques in a nursery. Very cool, and green. This needs to be fact checked, but I’m pretty sure that this restaurant is part of the Yours Truly group, owned by Daniel Holland.

They also have a vegan shakshuka option and anchovy toast which I’m desperate to try. The lunch and dinner menu looks perfect so I will be making my way there for lunch or dinner ASAP.
